Polestar has announced that its first all-electric SUV, called Polestar 3, is due in 2022 and will be built in the United States

The company will not build a new factory, however; it plans to build the Polestar 3 for US customers alongside Volvo Cars vehicles in Ridgeville, South Carolina.

The Polestar 3, which the company describes as “an aero performance electric SUV” – think Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6 – will not be built on the same adapted ICE platform that is on the market. base of the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge (which were developed together).

Instead, it will be built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, which is expected to be a version of the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) led by Volvo’s parent company, Geely, with input from the Volvo engineering. It is the modular platform that is to form the basis of future Volvo electric vehicles, including an electric Volvo XC90.

“The Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. “The United States is no longer an export market but a domestic market.

Polestar plans to open 25 US retail “spaces” in 2021 that will offer door-to-door testing, free pick-up and delivery, and mobile service for those too far from another Polestar space .

The automaker has established that it does not aim to be a mainstream brand, but it will also not be on par with luxury brands. In a statement, the company also noted that US production is reducing vehicle delivery times and price, as well as the environmental impact of its vehicles. “All of this makes the brand even more competitive in the critical US sales market,” said Dennis Nobelius, COO of Polestar.

The company has confirmed that the Polestar 3 will have “state-of-the-art connectivity features based on Google’s native Android Automotive OS infotainment system,” as well as advanced driver assistance features.

Polestar already has a particularly interesting and worldly history. Owned by Volvo Cars and Volvo’s Chinese parent company Geely, but based in Sweden – with mostly Swedish engineering – Geely has so far built all of its vehicles in China. With the US plant being Polestar’s first company outside of China or Sweden, sees this as an indication that it sees healthy demand for its special mix of Scandinavian electric vehicles in America.
